Home Learning
Formal homework
The opinions from parents regarding homework are quite divided and we have found that some families would like there to be more homework, whereas others would prefer the school not to set homework at all. As homework is not compulsory for children of a primary school age, and the guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) suggests schools should consider what they feel is best for their pupils when setting a policy for homework, we have decided that the school will have a consistent, more focused approach to the setting of homework. Our homework policy will be updated accordingly.
The focus will purely be on:
- Regular reading practise – all children Reception to Year 6. As a minimum, whilst we would hope that children read daily, we expect that children will read with an adult at home 4 or 5 times per week. When you have heard your child read, please can you write a comment in the Reading Record book. Key Stage book lists are available on the link below: www.booksfortopics.com/key-stage-book-lists
- Weekly spelling practise – from Year 1 upwards
- Weekly times table practise – from Year 3 upwards
- SATs practise questions for children in Year 6, when appropriate.
For our youngest children, in Reception, we will regularly share activities that you may wish to try out at home in line with what they are learning.
Year 6 spelling lists are shared with children using Spelling Frame - the children can use the tools and games on this site to practise their spellings. A spelling test will be given in school each Friday, after which new spelling lists will be posted.
We hope that this reduction or streamlining will give you more family time. Without doubt, family time enhances certain key skills that your child may need to develop and is also chance to have some fun and enjoyment, whilst supporting your child’s mental health.
Optional home learning (additional activities)
If your child wishes to extend their class work and do some additional activities at home through the term, please click on your child's year group to find this term's home learning activities. These are not compulsory, but do complement the curriculum for each term.
Parent support
For some year groups, we offer parent information meetings to provide parents with essential information about their child's curriculum, assessments and work in school. Presentations from these evenings (usually Reception, Y1 phonics, Y2 curriculum and assessment and Y6 end-of-key-stage assessments) can be found here.
