Naunton Park
Primary School

Sports Premium

All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.

It is advised that all children should have access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity per day, with at least 30 minutes being delivered in the school day.  The PE and sport premium aims to help primary schools achieve this aim.

Schools my use the PE and sport premium to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered to children.  This means that schools should:

  • develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that school provides;
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

At Naunton Park Primary School, we use the PE and sport premium to secure improvements following 5 Key Indicators in accordance to government requirements:

  1. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity;

  2. Profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement;

  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport;

  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils;

  5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

Our PE and sport premium action plan explains how we plan to and are spending the premium.  We are continuously updating and reviewing the opportunities that we offer our pupils but formally review the action plan twice-annually.

Swimming

Swimming is a national curriculum requirement. The 3 requirements for swimming and water safety are that by the end of key stage 2 pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres;
  • use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke;
  • perform a safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

The PE and sport premium can be used to train staff to deliver the above training or to provide top-up swimming lessons to pupils who have not met the above requirements.

School is required to publish the percentage of Year 6 pupils who met each of the above national curriculum requirements.  Naunton Park Primary School's attainment information is shown in the table below and further information can be found in the Sports Premium Action Plan below.

PE and sports from September 2020 (Recovery Curriculum)

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and partial school closure from March 2020-September 2020, and to follow government guidance, Naunton Park Primary School's aims for PE and sports provision from September 2020 are to:

  • Deliver PE lessons and physical activity breaks outdoors where possible;
  • Ensure the safe use and sharing of equipment and resources, cleaning them meticulously after use OR storing them for 72-hours before being used again;
  • Provide additional opportunities for physical activities and PE lessons to cater for those who have been less active during the school's partial closure;
  • Provide additional opportunities for physical activities during curriculum time and play times while extra-curricular clubs are temporarily not on offer.

These aims may, from September 2020 and through the year, require changes to be made to the planned spending of the Sports Premium for 2020-21.  These changes will be evident in the Sports Premium Action Plan at each review cycle.  Spending has been allocated (see below), but the school will adapt these plans according to children's needs, including to support the Recovery Curriculum and SEMH needs following lockdown.

The Sports Premium will be used in conjunction with the Pupil Premium and PSHE curriculum, especially during Terms 1 and 2 of 2020-21 to support children's integration back into full time school life, focusing on supporting children's wellbeing, including their mental health and physical health.
